“Shitholes” The Exhibit: One-Day Art Gallery in Philadelphia
Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and Casablanca, Morocco- March 12, 2018 - Le Chapeau Project, a unique art gallery concept, announces it has chosen Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, for its first exhibit, “Shitholes,” which will take place on September 28, 2018.
Launched in 2018, Le Chapeau Project brings one-day only art galleries to different locations worldwide. The exhibits are created to connect people, bridge cultures and break stereotypes through art. Le Chapeau Project wants to give people the opportunity to have a glimpse into worlds outside their own. Chapeau is French for “hats” and is commonly used as an expression to say “hats off” to someone for a job well done. Fatène and Steve started Le Chapeau Project to take their “hats off to remarkable artists in all corners of the globe”, as they say.
Founders Fatène Ben-Hamza (currently Tunis, Tunisia) and Steve Garguilo (currently Ciudad Juárez, Mexico), both living in migration frontiers some depict as “Shitholes,” want to challenge the current negative narrative spreading across the globe by showcasing the brilliant work of artists from these “shithole” regions. The exhibit will showcase contemporary artists from at least 15 countries, including Mexico, Haiti, Morocco, Tunisia, Tanzania and Mauritius. Artists from the United States are also to be expected.
Le Chapeau Project invites artists from all over the world to participate in the exhibit with art pieces. Our exhibit is open worldwide to all visual artists, including but not limited to those working in traditional styles, ie., painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, or with digital/new media, photography and film/video.
For Steve Garguilo, “Art transcends geography, so by showcasing art from places that some might call ‘shitholes,’ it allows for us to better understand, respect, and appreciate each other.”
Fatène Ben-Hamza stated, “This project represents an incredible and rare opportunity to spark a solid, much needed, intercultural dialogue and highlight unknown creators who truly deserve our hats off.”
The exact location and time of this unique exhibit will be announced closer to September.
